Expectations For Heat vs. Pacers Round 2

The Beasts of the East, Miami Heat and the Indiana Pacers, match up tonight  for the second time in eight days at the American Airlines Arena. If you haven't already, please don't feed too much into the hype. Much is made of the Pacers blatant pursuit of the Heat after falling short to them in the playoffs for the past 2 years in a row. The Pacers camp is not backing down from the challenge and are making no secret of the fact that they see this, and frankly every game against Miami, as a statement game. Miami is sticking with its subtle arrogant approach in not acknowledging these games as more than competitive regular season games. The first meeting ended in a 90-84 home win for Indiana. So does this make tonight a must win for Miami at home? Yes...and no.

Let's put things into perspective. This is not the playoffs. We are barely approaching the All-Star Break. We are only 24 games into the season so I would agree with Miami in saying this isn't a statement game, at least not for them. However, it is more than just a "good" regular season game. This is a brewing Eastern Conference rival that can pan out to be about as good as the growing Heat-Celtics rival of the past few seasons. It may not be a game in which Miami needs to make a statement, but it definitely needs to respond. If we're going to give the Heat the right to brush the hype of these games off because of the great success they've had the past 3 years, they had better step up and remind those that they think are beneath them, who they are. Losing on their own home court would give Indiana another stroke of confidence that Miami probably won't want to see the results of in the long run.

With all that being said, it still isn't do or die. If Indiana wins, the pot just stirs that much more as we anticipate April and further proves that this team is a force to be reckoned with, for those who weren't convinced. A fan mentioned to me on Twitter today that the Pacers have been putting on a show with the mentality to play every game like its their last, giving it 110%. My question to that would be: When facing Miami, what team doesn't? It isn't fair to sweep every Heat loss under the rug but they are undoubtedly the one team, if no other, that each of the other 29 teams in the league put on their best show for. It's not as easy for the opposition to do the same.

I expect LeBron to play, I expect the maximum regular season effort possible from both sides, and I expect the best playoff type atmosphere one could create in December. It might just a little chippy but unless LeBron is seriously limited and off his game, I don't see why Miami can't win. I'm not conceding the win to them though. Indy has had this game circled for months and there are no motivators that are quite the same as revenge and dislike. Above all, I just want fans on both sides to know one thing. It takes more than four regular season wins to dethrone a real champion, just as it only takes four blows to the head until that crown can wind up in the river fishing right along with you in April.

The game starts at 7pm on ESPN.

Deron Williams To Possibly Sit Beyond The Preseason

Brooklyn Nets head coach Jason Kidd said on Saturday PG Deron Williams could possibly miss a few games to start the season as he recovers from a sprained ankle.
"But we're not rushing him. So if we have to start the season with him still trying to get better, I think we all feel comfortable, but we would feel a little bit more comfortable if he was starting."
With the additions of Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett to virtually take Brooklyn to the next level of contention, Williams' health and presence are equally important. Of course the slow and steady method would be best being that ankle injuries do die hard. Still, this team will need ample time to mesh. Brooklyn went through a substantial makeover this summer by adding a new head coach in Jason Kidd and greats Pierce and Garnett.

Williams has been limited in training camp and won't play in any of the four preseason games Brooklyn has. Brooklyn needs to strike while the iron is hot. Williams is still in his prime so the time is now.

As a sidenote, Jason Kidd will also miss the first two games of the season after being suspended by the NBA for pleading guilty to driving while impaired. That is the least of Brooklyn's problems right now though.

Who's The Mann?

In Thursday night's NFL season opener, the Denver Broncos finished off the defending champion Baltimore Ravens 49-27. Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning made NFL history becoming the first player to record 3 career 6 touchdown passing games. Manning also tied NFL single-game record with 7 touchdown passes.

Notables of the Night

  1. Peyton's New Partners: Talk about breaking out! Prior to this game Julian Thomas, who hadn't seen much action in Denver for the pass 3 years due to injury, had only recorded one career catch. ONE! He ended the night with 5 receptions for 110 yards. Wes Welker finished the night with 9 receptions, two of which were for touchdowns from Manning. Granted, it was just the first game but these are targets that can turn into cash money for Denver as this season progresses. Not to mention the Broncos were without Von Miller (suspended for 6 games) and Champ Bailey (sprained foot).
  2. Jacoby Jones: One of the Ravens star receivers Jacoby Jones was shaken up in the second quarter after a collision during a punt return by his own teammate (see clip below). Jones left the game with a right knee sprain and did not return. Scary moment for Baltimore fans. This new Ravens team has a lot of new and young guys. They will need as much veteran experience and reliable targets for Flacco as they can get.
  3. Ravens' Readiness: Joe Flacco was just not on his game. Frankly, he got a good ole fashioned beating. He completed only 34 of his 62 passes, only 2 touchdown passes and 2 interceptions. The Ravens defense eventually was worn out by Denver. Thankfully for them having a Thursday night game means they won't see their week 2 opponent in Cleveland until next Sunday. That's enough time to implement many adjustments.

Along with his record setting touchdown passing games, Manning threw for 462 yards which is the second most in his career. The rumors of his strengthened arm seem to be true so far. If this offense continues to catch fire, especially after the return of some of their key receivers, things can get scary for the AFC.

Hopefully Jones makes a speedy recovery but this will be the Not Top Play for the weekend brought to you by Ravens rookie safety Brynden Trawick.

The Questionable Corner

Lamar Odom's Spiral Down

It has been a week of speculation, drama, and negativity surrounding Lamar Odom and his wife Khloe Kardashian-Odom. It began with allegations that Odom was addicted to crack cocaine. There were reports that he had gone missing, followed by reports that he wasn't missing. There were reports that he was likely heading back to rehab, followed by reports confirming that he was home at the Odom residence. There were reports of a family intervention for Odom in a hotel room he was staying in, followed by no confirmation.

Now the latest, according to the LA Times, is that Odom was arrested for DUI earlier this morning. Although it may not ALL be true, clearly something to these rumors is. This scares me.  Even though Lamar was clearly on the decline and was probably going to lucky to get one more year or so on a roster, I begin to wonder when this all started. He's has been through so much in the past few years beginning with getting the boot from the Lakers, losing a cousin, being involved in the death of a 15-year old boy, having a horrible season in Dallas and now this. I personally believed, and still do believe, that Khloe and Lamar's marriage is real. My thoughts and prayers go out to both of them and their families.

Clearly Odom has life issues to work out that go far beyond and that are far more serious than the game of basketball.

Johnny Manziel's Suspension

In light of the allegations and NCAA investigation of Johnny Manziel receiving money for signed autographs, the NCAA and Texas A&M reached an agreement to suspend Manziel for the first half of the Aggies game against Rice on Saturday.

Last week, Texas A&M Chancellor John Sharp came out and said " I know he's [Manziel] innocent". He said he'd seen enough evidence to come to the conclusion that Manziel did not violate any NCAA rules.

Texas A&M's Associate Athletic Director told USA Today that the "NCAA found no evidence Manziel received monetary reward in exchange for autographs", after the suspension was agreed upon. So why not let them proceed with their investigation? The NCAA cannot punish what they cannot prove. If there is no proof why take the punishment? Granted the served suspension will cease the NCAA's investigation into the matter so the roar of the allegations can be silenced. But we all know that the sting of scandals die hard.

I was one that thought the Aggies shouldn't have even sat Manziel if no suspension had come down by Saturday because that would concede Sharp's statement and make Manziel appear to be guilty. In the end, suppose Manziel did sign autographs for pay. SO WHAT! Yes it violates NCAA rules but let's think about the disgusting amount of money Texas A&M and the NCAA have made and will make off of the likeness of Johnny Football himself. Do we still care?

James Harden and Steph Curry Have Teamed Up

You read it right. James Harden and Steph Curry have joined forces...for a commercial. The two franchise players did a Foot Locker commercial together that hit the internet on Tuesday morning.

The commercial features Harden's hidden musical talent, using the word "talent" loosely. Check it out below along with a tweet from Harden as he jokes in light of the resounding Twitter response Kendrick Lamar has received throughout the day.

LeBron Won't Run For President

According to a USA TODAY Sports source, LeBron James has chosen not to run for President or First Vice President of the National Basketball Players Association.

The anonymous source close to the situation reports that James feels he will not have the time required to fulfill the duties of either of the two positions. He also has decided against filling executive or committee positions for the same reasons. James reportedly told fellow teammate and secretary-treasurer of the NBPA James Jones of his decision on Monday via phone.

Still, James told NBPA leadership to keep him informed of union issues and that he still plans to be the voice of change that the union needs.

Adrian Peterson Makes Wheaties Cereal Box Cover

Minnesota Vikings running back and reigning NFL MVP Adrian Peterson will appear on three limited-edition boxes of Wheaties cereal.

Peterson said on Monday that he is "blessed and fortunate to have such an honor." He added that as a kid, he always remembered his parents repeatedly reminding him that he'd better eat his Wheaties. AP now joins a list of other NFL greats like Dan Marino, Peyton Manning, and Michael Vick, to name a few, to grace the cover of the Breakfast of Champions.

General Mills, in alliance with Blippar, has made it possible for fans and consumers to download the Blippar app, "blipp" (scan) the code on the Wheaties boxes and then gain access to a special AP video game, shareable photos, and other exclusive hidden content. The first of the three sets of limited-edition boxes can be found on shelves nationwide now.

New Kidd In the Bronx

Recently retired NBA player Jason Kidd has been chosen by the Brooklyn Nets as their new head coach. Kidd played for the Nets, when the franchise was still in New Jersey, from 2001-2008 and led the team to 2 NBA Finals. At 40 years old, Kidd becomes the 1st player to become a head coach in the season immediately after retirement since Mike Dunleavy in 1990 with the Lakers.

There is no doubt that Kidd is a great player and will eventually become a Hall of Famer. He is still the Nets franchise leader in assists, steals, and 3 pointers. Still, as great and influential of a player he was, this was not a good move by the Nets.

The Brooklyn Nets spent this first year in a new city re-branding and rebuilding a bit. They had all the pieces to be a viable threat in the East, especially with their hot start going 11-4 in the month of November. But things cooled off quick. The Nets made the playoffs as the 4th seed in the East but ultimately faced a first round exit. This team is still trying to build its chemistry and develop role players. Surely a few roster changes will be made this summer but Brooklyn still obtained good playoff position. The Nets definitely want to be a championship contender in the East and are in line to improve along with many other Eastern Conference teams. Hiring a head coach that has no experience is just not the right move by the Nets. Had Kidd gone to a team like the Bobcats, the Pistons, the Magic or a team that aren't forseeable contenders, I would have no problem with it. He has a great basketball mind but this is too high risk and doesn't seem to be as high reward.

This could turn out very well. Kidd already has a great relationship with Nets franchise player Deron Williams. He could also make the transition from seeing the game as a player to seeing it as a coach more easily than we anticipate.  On the other end, Kidd can fail to make necessary adjustments that take place day-to-day and over the course of the season. The kind of adjustments that one learns how to more easily and wisely make with assisting experience. He could also have trouble feeling comfortable managing a group of 15 grown men. Rather than being one in the group, he would be required to motivate, teach, and instruct the multitude. I hope that he succeeds but I can't co-sign to this ill-advised move.

There are a few players and broadcasters around the league disagree with me however. On Wednesday night many of them sent out congratulatory tweets to Kidd of excitement and encouragement.

Tebow in Foxborough: Blessing or Curse?

Tim Tebow signed a two-year deal with the New England Patriots on Tuesday with no guaranteed money. He will reunite with former Florida Gators teammates Aaron Hernandez and Brandon Spikes as a Patriot.

Surely Tebow belongs in the league but there is much speculation as to whether he should truly be a quarterback or not. Tebow has much developing to do as a passer having a less than 50% career passer rating. There aren't many better QB's to "shadow" in this league than the one he now has in Tom Brady but is this opportunity a blessing or a curse?

On one hand its great that Tebow now has another chance in this league because he deserves it. He's a hard worker and competitor. The New England Patriots organization is the perfect one to silence the "circus show" that practically inevitably comes with having Tim Tebow on a roster. Tebow will also be allowed the opportunity to gain first class experience and development behind the scenes from Tom Brady while still a young 25.

Tebow said on Tuesday while addressing the media: "I'm looking forward to working hard every single day and getting a lot better, and learning under some great people."

On the other hand, there is no guarantee he will make the team. Tebow has training camp and the preseason to prove himself. If things don't work out to the Patriots liking, they can cut him. If he does make the team, there is no guarantee he will play. Tebow would be a third string quarterback on a team that Brady threw over 98% of the passes for last season. The likelihood of Bill Belichick taking Brady out to replace him with Tebow is about as good as that other 2%. Being signed two years to sit would be a waste of the time he has in his NFL career (which we know those don't typically last long).

If anyone, Belichick can come up with a way to effectively use Tebow but will it be in the way he wants to play? Will it allow him to perform to a level that parallels the rightfully hype of TebowMania? I sure hope so but that still remains to be seen.

And Then There Were Two...

Its funny how things work out. In early March I actually predicted that the Spurs would come out of the West and meet Miami in the Finals despite Tony Parker's ankle injury. Many thought there would be a Finals repeat or even gave the Clippers a shot, but I knew. Now that there are two, who wins it all? I've thought long and hard about this and frankly this series has so many variables that it becomes difficult to chose. Still, a choice must be made. In short, I predict the Miami Heat will be back-to-back NBA Champions in 6 games. But in detail, it is much more complicated than that.

For Miami to win: Two words: Dwyane Wade. Although clearly hurt, he will have to find a way to work it out. We saw good signs of life in Game 7 and if he is that active throughout the entire series he puts Miami in a great position to win another title. After Game 7 Wade told the media:
"There will be some moments next series where I won't be looking so great. I'm sure there will be some great headlines about myself. I'll continue pushing. I'll continue to try to do what I can to help the Miami Heat win another championship."
We know Wade has the heart of a champion. The question is: how often will that passion translate physically into his game during this series? He also won't have to expend as much energy on defense now guarding more spot up shooters rather than those that can beat him off the dribble like the guards of the Pacers.  Aside from him, Bosh also has to get going. He too showed good signs in Game 7 but surely wasn't the Chris Bosh of the regular season. I believe that Bosh can come out of his funk attributing a lot of that to having a considerably (physically) easier matchup than the physical beatdown he endured with Roy Hibbert and David West in the previous series. Over the last three years, Bosh has averaged about 23 points per game on 60% shooting from the field against Spurs. Norris Cole's ball pressure can't stop Tony Parker but he can surely do a good job guarding him. Miami will need the Big 3 and at least one more role player to consistently step up to close this series out in 6.

For San Antonio to win: Manu Ginobili's performance will be big. He has been nursing a hamstring injury but with the Spurs resting for 9 days, he will likely come back much healthier than he was in previous series. The spark and skill he can provide off the bench is almost unmatched by a Miami bench player. Tiago Splitter is definitely coming into his own and plays great defense. He isn't Roy Hibbert but he can surely protect the paint and rim for the Spurs and cause problems for the smaller Heat. The Spurs are definitely more healthy than Miami is right now which is another advantage for this extremely poised team.

Tony Parker and Tim Duncan are having great post seasons and I don't see them slumping on this stage. I wouldn't at all be surprised if San Antonio won this series and I wouldn't be surprised if it went 7 games. But all in all in my opinion, it will be the team that has the strongest and sharpest supporting cast to the superstars that will come out victorious.

The full NBA Finals Schedule is below. I will be at Game 2 so I will try to take as many pictures for you all as possible and give a better analysis of what I see from the players (and fans) witnessing a piece of this series in person.

Hibbert's Fine: Fair or Foul?

Indiana Pacers center Roy Hibbert has been fined $75,000 by the league for using "inappropriate and vulgar" language during a post game interview Saturday night after Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Finals. Hibbert said "no homo" while answering a question asked by a reporter.

In 2011, Kobe Bryant was fined $100,000 for calling an official a "f*cking f*ggot". Now two years later in spite of  Hibbert issuing a "sincere apology" he was fined just $25,000 fewer than Bryant. Did he deserve to be fined although he apologized? If so, was the fine too severe?

I think the fine could have been $50,000 but I definitely think he deserved to be fined. Hibbert made this comment during a nationally televised interview, that many outlets likely ran live, while not only representing the Pacers organization but the international brand which is the NBA. You simply cannot say things like that. With millions of fans watching, who knows how may he may have offended if not a reporter in that very room. Letting the slur go without league action implies that the NBA tolerates that kind of speech and/or supports homophobic mentalities  Hibbert may also have children out there that look up to him that may have taken his comment as justification in publicly making homophobic slurs of that nature or go on to adapt a homophobic mentality.

The First Amendment does include free speech but the NBA is a private company which gives them the right to discipline those that work for them in any way they see fit. This explains why coaches and players are fined for commenting on officiating. I'm sure Hibbert sincerely did not mean to offend anyone but as a professional and public figure he has to learn that you cannot say everything that comes to mind, comical and innocent or not. What better way to remind himself than with a $75,000 receipt.

If you missed the interview, check it out below (starts at :25):

Celebrity Sightings

While in Puerto Rico on vacation this past Memorial Day weekend I ran into a few athletes. I won't let my encounter influence or shape the opinion you may have of these men so I won't go into detail of each experience.
Darrelle Revis, cornerback for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and I at Club Brava (05/25/2013). He seemed to be a very nice man and really kind to his fans. Good luck on your season and recovery Mr. Revis

James Harden, guard from the Houston Rockets, at Isla Verde Beach (05/25/2013) with his friends.

Harden and friends after leaving Club Brava (05/25/2013)

I apologize for the blurriness of the James Harden photos but I could not get close enough to him to take a clear picture. It appeared, though not confirmed, that Revis may have been staying at the Conrad San Juan Condado Hotel Plaza (per fan testimony). Harden appeared to be staying in a villa right behind Isla Verde Beach.

Can Miami Fly Without Birdman?

Miami Heat forward Chris "Birdman" Andersen was suspended by the league on Friday for one game without pay for shoving Indiana Pacers forward Tyler Hansbrough in Game 5. As a result Andersen is not eligible to play in a potential close-out game 6 tonight in Indiana.
Birdman has shot 100% from the field (15-of-15) in this series, blocking shots, being the Heat's "enforcer" and being another bigger body on the floor for a small Miami team. Can the Heat finish this series in 6 games without him? Sure they can.
No doubt Miami has a better chance with Andersen being active and able to play. If you recall last year's Game 6 close out in Indy though, Miami was without two of their bigs in Chris Bosh (abdominal strain) and Udonis Haslem (suspended for one game) yet still pulled off a convincing 105-93 win. Dwyane Wade dropped 41 points that night and with his now hindering knee injury he won't likely explode for that many points tonight. Still, Wade is a competitor. Miami head coach Erik Spolestra called him "a warrior" after Game 5. He is definitely giving his team all he's got but in a desperation game for both teams as this one is, it is essential that if he can't get his shot going or get in the lane, he makes plays for his teammates in anyway possible.
LeBron has assumed the role of the leader of this Heat team even more so now than he had during last year's series. His 16-point third quarter performance in Game 5 was spectacular and he put the Pacers and those watching on notice that he is capable of doing that again and will if need be.
Chris Bosh will need to be more aggressive. The ankle he tweaked in Game 4 seems to be making him a little uncomfortable but he too has to push through it. Start off rolling to the basket to get himself going then work on finding his touch from the perimeter again to draw Roy Hibbert out of the low post. Bosh will also have to make a concerted effort to box out and rebound more, regardless of if his shots are falling or not, to avoid Indiana getting those easy offensive rebound put backs and second chance points that have really been hurting Miami all series.
To close a strong Pacers team out like this one, it is going to take more than just the Big 3. Haslem has shot 8-of-9 from the field in two of the last three games and has proven that he can be just as much of an enforcer as Andersen. Miami has great depth but it is all for show if someone doesn't step up and step up big. If UD stays in rhythm while Wade and Bosh give more production than in Game 5, Miami can be heading to the NBA Finals for the 3 straight year after tonight's game.

Extra, Extra, Read All About it!

Great news for you all! Today I started an internship with NBC Sports Talk Florida. I will be posting sports articles, strictly Florida sports for the most part, almost every day. Most of them will be short synopsis articles just to give an overview of a story but I will also atleast once a week be contributing my own original article. For the Heat fans out there definitely stay tuned; there is a chance that I can be a Miami Heat insider in which case I would cover all of the Heat news I can find. I have posted a few articles already today which I will provide the links to below.  Now for a brief Rundown!

Who's Expecting?
Miami Heat star Chris Bosh is expecting yet another addition to his family. His wife Adrienne made the news public on Monday via Twitter. The Bosh family seems to associate playoff basketball with bundles of joy as their youngest son Jackson was born during the first round of last year's playoffs versus the New York Knicks.
Phoenix Suns point guard Shannon Brown is also expecting a new addition to his family with his wife R&B artist Monica. Monica made the pregnancy public by posting pictures on her Instagram outlining her clearly pregnant belly this past weekend. This will be the couple's first child together.
Congratulations to the Bosh and Brown family!

Kobe in the Courtroom
Lakers guard Kobe Bryant has been making news these past few weeks for the legal drama he and his mother are involved in. Bryant is suing a New Jersey auction house to prevent them from conducting a sale to auction a collection of Bryant memorabilia including high school uniforms and autographed basketballs supplied to them by Bryant's mother. Things could get ugly because Kobe's father, Joe Bryant, and Kobe's grandmother are actually siding with Pamela Bryant, Kobe's mother, supporting that Kobe told his mother that she could have the items. U.S District Judge Renee Bumb set a court-guided mediation session for this Friday for the family in addition to setting the trial date for June 17th. Best of luck to the Bryant family in this sticky situation.

Defense Wins Championships
LeBron James and Tony Allen each received the most votes en route to making this year's NBA All-Defensive First Team collecting 52 and 53 respectively. "We pride ourselves on defense here," said James. Upon hearing the news from Craig Sager following last night's Heat victory over the Bulls,  LeBron admitted he was indeed upset about not being named Defensive Player of the Year but he thanked the coaches, rather than the writers that decide the DPOY, for recognizing the work he does on that side of the ball. The Clippers' Chris Paul also made the team with 37 votes, the Thunder's Serge Ibaka with 46 votes, as well as the Bulls' Joakim Noah and the Knicks' Tyson Chandler both with 24 votes. This year's Defensive Player of the Year, Grizzlies Center Marc Gasol, did not make the Defensive First Team.

Jayhawks win the Prize
Top ranked high school basketball player Andrew Wiggins has signed his national letter of intent to attend the University of Kansas. He had until Wednesday to sign it but he has done so early killing the hopes of Kentucky, Florida State, and North Carolina of adding him to their rosters. Wiggins averaged 23.6 points, 11.7 rebounds, and 4.3 assists for Huntington Prep in West Virginia. Originally growing up in Toronto, he is the best Canadian prospect since Steve Nash. Some even say he is the best high school basketball prospect since LeBron James. Nice compliments for the kid.

Knights Next Level

NFL teams have officially started their rookie minicamps. You can find out about the progress and interactions that have transpired during some coveted draft picks like Geno Smith and Manti Te'o's experience on SportsCenter. However there are some very good players from my very own university, the one and only University of Central Florida, that have also recently gotten their first taste of NFL life.

Kemal Ishmael
Kemal Ishmael, a strong safety from Miami, Florida, was drafted by the Atlanta Falcons in the 7th round. Ishmael had 4 remarkable seasons while at UCF topped off with being named the Conference USA's Defensive Player of the Year this past season. The Falcons pick up a safety that also excels at tackling with Ishamael being just the third Knight in UCF history to lead the team in tackles three times in his career (2010-2012). Below Ishmael is running a drill at the Falcons rookie camp last weekend.

Latavius Murray
Latavius Murray, a running back originally from Nedrow, New York, was drafted in the 6th round by the Oakland Raiders. Murray made All C-USA First Team this past season, finished his college career second overall in UCF history in touchdowns with 44, and was named the team's MVP in 2011. Murray played for UCF from 2008-2012 receiving a red shirt his sophomore season (2009) to recover from knee surgery. The following season he made a major comeback by helping the Knights get to the Conference USA Championship in which he was named the 2010 C-USA Championship MVP. Already, Murray has made a great impression on the Raiders during rookie minicamp. At 6-3 and 230 pounds, he is bigger than most running backs and stronger than most receivers as Murray has also ran routes for the Raiders as a receiver. Raiders head coach Dennis Allen said:
"He runs nice routes, he's extremely intelligent so he's picked up the offense really well, and he's got really soft hands so he does a nice job not only catching the ball but when you look at it he's done a nice job of picking up in pass protection."
This week, the real pros will join the camp so of course Murray still has more to prove but first impressions are lasting impressions.

Quincy McDuffie
Quincy McDuffie, wide receiver from Orlando, Florida, was signed as free-agent to the Denver Broncos. McDuffie finished his career as a Knight as the all-time leader in UCF history in kickoff return touchdowns, kickoff returns, and kickoff return yards. He has great speed and does a good job at keeping his speed even when having to change direction. McDuffie will have to continue to prove himself since he wasn't drafted but he definitely has the skill set, toughness, and mentality to do so.

Ray Shipman
Ray Shipman, offensive linebacker from Miami, Florida, was signed as free agent to the New Orleans Saints. This past season Shipman started in 12 games and recorded 91 tackles for UCF. He is listed at 6-5 and 242 pounds and with all the training Shipman put in prior to draft day I'm sure he will get his moment. The Saints minicamp commenced on Friday at their facility but unfortunately it was not open to any of the public so no photos have been released. However, I did recover this photo from Shipman's Instagram.

Other former Knights including A.J Bouye and Troy Davis have also been signed to NFL teams, the Houston Texans and the New York Jets respectively, as free-agents. Knights always do work so I'm confident that all of these men will work hard to reach their goals and produce at the next level. No matter what team they play for now or in the future, we all know a little black and gold will still run through your veins. Congratulations gentlemen!

Where Are They Now?

What have some of major sports most polarizing figures, their teammates, and prospects been up to during their off-seasons you ask?

Robert Griffin III: RGIII has obviously been putting in a lot of work into the rehabilitation of his right knee in which he tore his ACL during the playoffs. Still, the reigning NFL Rookie of the Year has made time to give back to the community and support charitable causes. On Monday, RGIII attended teammate Brian Orakpo's charity golf event held at Trump National Golf Club. The event raised money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Griffin did not participate in the event but simply went out to support his teammate and a great cause. He updated these statuses on his Facebook account this week:
"Enjoyed WATCHING & meeting everyone at Orakpo's Charity Golf Tournament, especially my main man Tyler McMillian"
"Tyler is 1 of 2 patient heroes at Orakpo's charity golf event. May the other patient hero, Brendan Kelly, Rest In Peace in the Heavens"
"Great Week. Helped Raise money for Cancer. Team is laying foundation for the season & I'm feeling healthy #Blessed #TheGifted"

You may or may not be a fan of his but there is no doubt that RGIII is a class act and is a great example of a franchise face. He also recently attended the Redskins FanFest during the NFL Draft.

Kobe Bryant: Kobe has become quite the active social network user lately. This past season in addition to joining Twitter, he also made an Instagram just a day after he endured his season ending torn Achilles tendon injury. Bryant recently celebrated his 12th year of marriage to his wife Vanessa as well as his wife's birthday when Bryant flew the chef from Vanessa's favorite restaurant in Milano to LA to cook her favorite dishes. He even showed a little of his sense of humor today by participating in the weekly #ThrowbackThursday trend on Instagram and uploaded a picture of him being fitted for his mask he had to wear for a small stretch of last season after taking a shot to the nose from Dwyane Wade in the All-Star game. I don't know about you but I am loving this new personable, down-to-earth, fun Kobe Bryant. If you don't follow him already you should. He's sure to entertain you in some way.

Trey Burke: After losing the National Title Game, it seems the world stopped buzzing about this year's AP College Basketball Player of the Year Trey Burke. Burke officially went public with his decision to enter the NBA Draft this June after the tournament was over. His Twitter account was also verified after NCAA Tournament. He recently uploaded a picture of a high priced car on his Instagram account, leaving the implication that it was his, but he eventually deleted the photo. He is a minimal tweeter and the majority of his Instagram photos lately have just been shots of his outfits and face shots to tease the ladies, in my opinion. He recently attended Game 7 of the Bulls/Nets series and tweeted that Rihanna looked "very good in person". Not shy at all huh Trey? Don't let Chris find you. Then again I'm not sure Chris should worry because Trey's sister recently uploaded a picture on her own Instagram account of what appears to be subtle publicizing of Trey and his girlfriend. Sorry ladies.

Colin Kaepernick: San Francisco 49ers breakout quarterback Colin Kaepernick has trademarked his in-zone move, kissing his muscle, calling it "Kaepernicking". On Tuesday he got the opportunity to meet FLOTUS Michelle Obama. He uploaded this photo to his Instagram; I would say it's catching on.

Metta World Peace: It just isn't a normal year when Metta World Peace, the former Ron Artest, doesn't do something to make us all shake our heads. Most recently, last night during Game 2 of the Warriors/Spurs series he tweeted:
"Curry gets the #Twinhearts co sign...I think Steve Curry is Top 10 in the NBA. If he world on his defense, he will be MVP next year."
After the game STEPH Curry's teammate Jarrett Jack retweeted World Peace adding: " I think his name is steph". Of course being the true sport that Steph is he closed it out last night by tweeting:
"Back to Oakland. Ready to get back to work already. Steve Curry...out!"
It all made for a good laugh. About an hour ago, MWP corrected himself on the misspelling of Curry's name and added that he's still a potential MVP with Curry simply replying "appreciate it bro!"

The Missing: It is worth noting that Clippers stars Chris Paul and Blake Griffin, as well as Lakers Center Dwight Howard haven't tweeted much of anything in days. Howard hasn't posted anything on his Facebook or Twitter account since April 30th. Paul thanked his fans earlier this week for the birthday wishes but that has been about it. Each, Paul and Howard, are free agents this summer and have big decisions to make. Don't worry though, as soon as I get the news, so will you!

Weigh-in Wednesday

It's only noon on the East Coast and already the rumor mill is buzzing and news has hit the deck in the Sports World. I want you all to weigh-in on these topics today. Tweet me @RealRundown or comment below.

Rose to Return?
Rumors from several sources have been surfacing this morning of Derrick Rose possibly suiting up for Game 3. It is not clear if this means he will actually play, or how many minutes he would get, but the speculation is out there. I personally think this is a questionable decision. On one hand it would seem to put the Bulls in a better position to win the series. On the other hand, if Rose was going to return I thought the best time table would have been sometime in the first round series against the Nets. To come back after over a year of not playing and jump into the mix against the defending champions who are clearly pushing to repeat seems to be a little more high risk than high reward. The Miami Heat, especially after losing Game 1, aren't going to go easy on Rose because he's just getting back into the swing of things. If anything I would think they would turn up the pressure on him to test that "mental readiness" he's been trying to regain. Which leads me to my next question: What about Friday makes him so mentally ready more than he would be Wednesday? If Rose is ready to play shouldn't he get back out there as soon as the next opportunity presents itself? I mean in theory that would give Chicago a better chance to take a more dominant lead in the series, right?

Who's Ring is it Anyway?
Mario Williams, defensive end for the Buffalo Bills, signed a 6-year $96 million contract last year. Now his second year into the contract, that he thus far hasn't lived up to, his latest magic number is $785,000. He is now suing his ex-fiancee Erin Marzouki over a 10-carat engagement ring worth $785,000 that she refuses to give back after the engagement was called off in January. The engagement was allegedly called off by Marzouki. Williams lawyers argue that since the ring was obtained in Texas, a no-fault gift state, he has a "right to recovery". Simply speaking, the giver of the ring is legally allowed to ask for it back in the case of the "breach of the marriage engagement by the donee". I think she for sure should give the ring back. The engagement is off and if she indeed called it off I see no argument she can use to justify keeping it. Even in the case that he cheated on her, as a woman if you are fed up with a situation you cut ties, seeing as they have no children, and move on.

Questionable Coaching?
This morning the head coach of the Denver Nuggets, George Karl, was named the 2012-2013 NBA Coach of the Year. I love George Karl as a coach and his story of battling multiple cancers but remaining a solid and inspiring coach is amazing. Denver finished the season 57-25 with an NBA best 38-3 home record. They were the 3rd seed going into the playoffs but got knocked out in the first round by a fierce Golden State team. After the All-Star break, a superstar-less Nuggets team gave us all a bit of a wake-up call as to just how tough they were. They went on a franchise record setting 15-game winning streak and were 24-4 post All-Star break. Karl received 62 of 121 1st-place votes but did he deserve the award? Miami's head coach Erik Spolestra finished in 2nd-place with only 24 1st-place votes, New York's Mike Woodson finished in 3rd place, Golden State's Mark Jackson in 7th place, and Chicago's Tom Thibodeau in 8th place. I was actually a little shocked when I heard the news. I personally thought either Mark Jackson, Mike Woodson, or Erik Spolestra should have won, leaning more toward Jackson. Mark Jackson has done a phenomenal job with Golden State this year leading them into the playoffs and growing this young talented roster over these past two years. Mike Woodson has really stabilized this Knicks team and made great decisions to elevate their performances. I don't see how anyone can discredit Spolestra because he has been tried, tested, and proven on multiple occasions. Getting this superstar roster to effectively work together, remaining poised even when it doesn't look good for his team, guiding them through a 27-game winning streak and the list goes on. A strong argument can also be made for Thibodeau who has led a tough and resilient Chicago team who has endured injury after injury this season and short-handed from the start into the conference semifinals with a puncher's chance to come out victorious.

What do you all think? I want to hear from you NOW!

Don't Call It A Comeback!

Hello lovely readers! I know that a lot has happened since the last time I posted from the NFL Draft, to Jason Collins coming out, the postseason ending injuries of Russell Westbrook and David Lee, as well as some NBA Playoff drama in the first round. I assure you all that this wasn't my intent and I really wish I could have gotten some posts out for you all. If you saw the video I attached the link to in the post prior to this one, I briefly explained what was going on. Unfortunately last week my grandfather did indeed pass away so just as school ended I had to be with my family and get through that tough time. Nonetheless, I'M BACK! I obviously cannot cover all of the ground I've missed but I cannot ignore the hype of the NBA Playoffs right now. At this point all Game 1's have been played. What forecasts do I see as the pressure rises in the Playoff Sea? Let's very briefly go through my predictions.

Western Conference

(2) San Antonio Spurs vs. (6) Golden State Warriors: As much of a Stephen Curry fan I am and despite the great deal of promise I see in this Golden State team, I am going to go with the Spurs in 6 games. When it comes down to it, Golden State's talent will make each game interesting but their youth and inexperience is what will cost them. The mistakes they made against Denver cannot be made against San Antonio and end in a series victory. If the Spurs continue to get their health back the way they have seemed to be doing, the Warriors will not be able to withstand this veteran and disciplined squad. In my opinion, Golden State is the latest, and arguably better, model of the old OKC before they boldly emerged (like the OKC of 2010-2011). They're extremely talented, young, athletic, confident, and have the makings of a future elite team in the West. But they have trouble closing out games which we saw last night in Game 1 against the Spurs as well as Game 6 against the Nuggets. The only difference is that Denver couldn't capitalize on the Warriors collapse, San Antonio did. If players like Klay Thompson, Steph Curry, and Jared Jack remain on this roster I expect to see them at this same level again next year, hopefully with more favorable odds. Let's not forget the impact having a healthy David Lee would have had on this series either.

(1) Oklahoma City Thunder vs. (5) Memphis Grizzlies: Although OKC took Game 1, I have questions about how powerful they'll be able to be without Westbrook against a rough and tough team like Memphis. Zach Randolph, as Stan Verrett says time and time again, doesn't bluff. He is aggressive, skilled, and can easily stand out to make himself look like the man amongst boys. The homecourt advantage OKC gets from their electric crowd is powerful but I can easily see this one going to 6 or 7 in Memphis' favor. I have no doubt that Kevin Durant is great enough to lead his team to victory because he's one of the best in the league but my question is: Will he? Durant is used to delivering that 1-2 punch with Westbrook in tow. All of a sudden the load of pressure builds from not only getting back to the NBA Finals but doing so by virtually putting the team on his back and going through some very serious Western Conference competitors. Let's see how "Not Nice" KD can become.

Eastern Conference

(1) Miami Heat vs. (5) Chicago Bulls: There is no doubt that the Bulls deserve credit for not only their performance last night in Game 1 but the entire season. They have been short-handed from day 1, constantly counted out, yet very frequently rise to the occasion and come out victorious. With that being said however, I still do not believe they have the will and strength the beat Miami in a 7-game series. If the Bulls first round series, the last playoff Game 1 Chicago and Miami played in 2011, or even last year's Game 1 of the NBA Finals should have taught us anything it should have been not to read too deeply into Game 1. Miami are the defending champs and had just come off of 7 days of rest, which clearly turned into a bit of rust. No excuses because they still could have gotten it done but LeBron wasn't even in double digits going into the 4th quarter. That's not typical. Expect adjustments on Wednesday night. Miami in 6 games.

(2) New York Knicks vs. (3) Indiana Pacers: In my opinion, neither one of these teams have enough 48 minute consistency for me to think that this series can't easily go to 7 games. This one kind of has me stumped but in the end I will take the Knicks in 6 or 7. I think they will adjust the mistakes they made in game 1 and Carmelo Anthony will come out more focused and efficient. He went for just 10-of-28 from the field in Game 1. He's made it out of the first round but now is not the time to get complacent. If Anthony wants to undoubtedly recognized as the superstar that many feel he is, he must prove what he can do when the pressure is on and his team, now that he has further matured as a player, is actually a contender. On the other hand, the world was put on notice last postseason that the Pacers are not a team that folds when they are supposed to be "afraid". The hype doesn't hinder them from stepping up to the challenge. Indiana is a just below .500 road team on the season but has an almost identical home record to New York at 30-11 (to the Knicks' 31-10). Being that they have already stole one on the road, they are too in good position to win the series. Though I'm calling it in favor of New York, this can be either team's series.

If there is anything you want me to post about regarding the playoffs, incidents around the Sports World, or major news I missed while I was gone, contact me on Twitter, Facebook or via e-mail. It feels good to be back!

Whats Going On

I'm sure some of you have noticed that I haven't posted in over a week which is completely uncharacteristic. Here is an explanation as to why I've been missing in action. I couldn't get the video to embed itself so I put the link below.

Its Time For The Show!

The NBA Playoffs officially start tomorrow. Obviously the first round doesn't elicit overall excitement because some series just have a clear cut winner from the start. Then there are the other match ups that you can't ignore. What four do I think you should pay attention to? Let's explore. (Note: As the rounds progress I will preview/predict the key series)

(7) Los Angeles Lakers vs. (2) San Antonio Spurs
Although I still have my reservations about LA and how everyone seems to suddenly be a supporter and rooting for them for what they "accomplished", I give them credit for not collapsing without Kobe although I'm not surprised. Dwight has always had the ability to be that dominant and we all already knew about Pau's versatile ability. The thing that makes this series interesting is the fact that though both teams have struggled with injuries this season, the Spurs have probably suffered the most from them down the stretch. Starting with Tony Parker spraining his ankle (and is now playing as a shell of his former MVP-caliber self) Ginobili's reoccurring injuries, losing Boris Diaw to season-halting back surgery, Stephen Jackson being waived, and Tim Duncan continuously aging (although he's still playing great ball), this is just not the same team I previously picked to meet Miami in the Finals. Nonetheless, when you're going up against Popovich and such a fundamentally trained and skilled as the Spurs you just can't count them out. Ginobili and Parker are both expected to play in this series and although they have gone just a mere 10-10 in their last 20 games, I think the Spurs will take this series in 6. I'm not saying the Lakers can't win because surely this new system they've implemented is effective for them, but history and experience is what I have to go with for this one. This will probably be the most dramatic series on the West Coast battling with OKC taking on the 8th seeded Rockets, former teammate James Harden's new team.

The 4's and 5's
I think each conference has a great 4th and 5th seed match up. In the West there's the (4)Los Angeles Clippers vs. the (5) Memphis Grizzlies. These two teams met last year in the first round and the Clippers took the series in 7 games. However many say that LA wouldn't have won that series had Memphis not gotten content and blew a 27-point 4th quarter lead in game 1 at home! I am one of those people. Though this is surely a different Clippers team than last year, especially with the potential 6th man of the year Jamal Crawford on the roster, I still say Memphis has a great chance. I love Zach Randolph's versatility coupled with that of Marc Gasol's. These are two big men that can score from other places than just the low post. Mike Conley is a great guard when he's on his game and the defensive guru that Tony Allen is is sure to mix up things for LA. On the other hand we all know the greatness of Chris Paul. I see this series going to 6 though in favor of the Grizzlies. When the Playoffs start all of the Lob City hype and highlight dunks tend to decrease.
The (4)Brooklyn Nets take on the (5)Chicago Bulls in a series that I find interesting for perhaps the wrong reason. Although many like to call Chicago the "streak-busters" and surely they deserve credit for their perseverance through all of the adversity this season has brought upon them, I'm not sold. The Nets aren't always consistent either but I will say that if they can lock down and commit on the defensive end they will be the winners in 6 games. The Bulls problem is, and has always been since Rose went down, their lack of enough offense. Chicago will commit defensively and they won't back down from a challenge no doubt but if Brooklyn shuts off the little offense they do consistently get, its a wrap. Deron Williams and Joe Johnson make for a dangerous backcourt when they are on it and Brooke Lopez is amazing down low. Neither team has showed me enough to hands down give it to either one of them so it can go both ways. I will be interested in seeing how the Bulls take on this series because this isn't just a case of beating a team any given night as the regular season is. This is win or go home and you've got 4 shots at it.

(2)New York Knicks vs. (7)Boston Celtics
This, in my opinion, is the best first round series of them all this year. The seed number can't even heavily be factored into the equation. One thing Boston has that trumps that of any team in this league is heart. When they start feeling that pride, they transcend themselves to do things that everyone counted them out for. In addition, I think the Boston Marathon tragedy can easily serve as fuel for them to bring life back into the city. There is no denying that Carmelo Anthony is playing outstanding basketball and can get it done from anywhere on the court. J.R. Smith is a sure candidate for 6th man of the Year with some even calling him the favorite. KG against Tyson Chandler will be interesting to watch down low because if nothing else, regardless of if the man is bigger or taller, no one can out due the pride of Kevin Garnett. Chandler isn't 100% healthy right now and Melo has been tussling with a lingering knee issue in addition to a recent a shoulder injury. This will be the most physical series of this round which makes it even more possible to go either way. If it's close, like beyond 6 games, I'd have to go with Boston. The superior coaching of Doc Rivers doesn't even belong in the same sentence as that of Mike Woodson (no knock on him though). If New York is gonna get it done it has to be in 6 or less. I don't even see a sweep happening although I'm sure Melo would love to avenge that Boston sweep the Knicks endured in 2011. One thing is for sure: the pressure is on for Melo whether he wants to admit it or not. Losing in the first round again will undoubtedly take a huge shot to is legacy. It's going to get hot in New York ladies and gentlemen!

Let the drama begin. Here's the full first round series schedule: NBA Playoff Games

The Aftermath

Yesterday at 2:50 pm, 2 bombs went off at the finish line of the Boston Marathon about 15-20 seconds between one another. The bombings left at least 145 people injured, including 10 children, at least 17 in critical condition, and at least 3 dead. Among the deceased was Martin Richard, an 8-year old boy. About 17,000 runners had already crossed the finish line at the time of the attack. Practically every news outlet covered the story as it developed from about 3:15 pm until midnight and beyond. The President addressed the country at about 6:10 pm yesterday evening to send his thoughts and prayers to the victims and families and to assure the American people that the person(s) responsible would be held fully accountable. Government officials say that this may have been a terrorist attack. I won't go on and on and repeat the same facts and developments that you have probably heard time and time again on the news. My thoughts are with what will happen to the city of Boston and our country as a result of this.
It is so saddening to see something like this to happen on a day like Patriots Day in Boston that exemplifies so much unity. For starters, will there be a Boston Marathon in 2014? I watched SportsCenter last night and saw an account of a runner that said he was probably going to have to wait a few years before he considers participating. I would imagine that runners and spectators would be equally traumatized to return to this race, at least for a few years whether it is annually continued or not. Many eyewitnesses reported that today, the day after the tragedy, they are more shaken up than yesterday. The constant "what-ifs" and traumatizing images etched in their mind are not easy to erase.
What about future marathons in other locations? The London Marathon is set for this coming Sunday. People in London are worried about the safety and security measures that will be taken during their event. Surely some runners will not participate in light of this incident simply our of fear. The tragic attack will call for even more locked down and excessive security for future mass civilian sporting events. These kinds of events aren't meant to feel like one is going through an airline checkpoint and sadly moving forward it will .
Ben Revere of the Philadelphia Phillies wrote on "Pray For Boston" on his glove before last night's game against the Cincinnati Reds. It was only fitting that he made an amazing catch in the bottom of the second inning for a double play. Other professional athletes took to social media to send out their sympathies as a result of the attack.

LeBron James
"Prayers go out to those involved/hurt in #BostonMarathon. WTF is wrong with people man. Just sad."
Chad Ochocinco
"My prayers are with those in the Boston area"
Stephen Curry
"What's wrong with people man! An innocent event can't go without incident. Prayers for all in Boston and their families"
Kobe Bryant

Checkout Revere's catch (:13 mark) and glove below.
